We scour Singapore’s bar scene to bring you the new and noteworthy – this time it’s lush gin and wine garden bar The Rabbit Hole on Harding Road. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!
First Impressions: Pretty fairy lights light up the verdant entrance to this secluded Dempsey gin gem (located on the same site as The White Rabbit), making you feel as if you’re entering a secret garden. Black-and-white upholstered garden chairs and pretty English vintage-style tables pay homage to the colonial history of the area. Looking out through “the rabbit hole” of this classic walled garden, gin in hand, gives a wonderful sense of tranquillity and space.
The Chosen One: The Monkey 47 ($22). Don’t be fooled by the fresh limes and lemongrass protruding from the goblet; this drink is 47 percent alcohol, so take it steady. Gin is the menu here, with a variety of gin tonics and cocktails created by “group bar mentor” Julian Serna. Herbs and flowers picked from the on-site garden play a big part in all the drinks, and the tonic water is made in-house.
The Cheapskate: The Hendrick’s ($16), part of the “Floral and Elegant” section of the menu, a pure classic and a little easier on the wallet.
Bite on This: We nibbled from a platter of chorizo Ibérico, duck rillettes, saucisson rosette, smoked duck breast and pork terrine ($19) from the charcuterie selection. The truffle brie toast ($18) and baked beans and crispy tortilla ($11) helped to soak up the divine cocktails.
Last but not least: For a fun group experience, opt for the White Rabbit Punch ($88, serves five), made with gin, lavender syrup, chamomile tea and pink grapefruit juice, topped with soda. There’s an extensive selection of wines, beers and other spirits for non-gin lovers. And then there’s The Rabbit Hole’s French crepe station developed by three-Michelin-starred chef Bruno Menard.
