Bar review: Nightclubs Avalon and Pangaea at Marina Bay Sands

An awesome sound system and large dance floor keep the crowds returning

It was only a matter of time before an über-sleek but raging super club hit our shores. Avalon arrived loud and proud for the F1 weekend and hasn’t stopped spinning since.

We arrived on a Saturday night and walked out over the water into the floating greenhouse to the upbeat and soulful pipes of a live Alice Russell. At water level, the view of the bay is pretty special. And if you settle into one of the VIP booths that surround the dance floor you’ll get the best of the drinks, dancing and vista.

We also explored the upstairs back bar where a slightly more chilled vibe pumps but it’s not at a conversation-friendly volume.

Back at the cavernous dance area, the crowd have warmed up, doing their best to shed Singapore’s conformist steps and break out into some fierce and, dare I say, eye-closed shapes. Though it’s predominantly a young and fashionable crowd, there are also older clubbers getting involved. Drinks are punchy and so are the prices, but that’s hardly unexpected from the sharpest nightspot to hit the clubbing scene since… er, Zouk?

Pangaea

Billed as an “ultra-lounge”, Pangaea, which opened in late September to rave reviews, is a sophisticated and stylish nightspot. It’s one of several clubs of the same name established across the world by nightclub guru Michael Ault.

After entering through the basement of Marina Bay Sands and a sterile, dimly lit tunnel, it’s a surprise to find what feels like a big, comfortable lounge. The stunning ceiling is made up of 20,000 handblown glass orbs, and an animal theme incorporates crocodile and ostrich skin lounges, exotic wooden centrepieces and African tribal masks from Ault’s own collection.

Custom-made dance “piers” got a workout on the nights we visited; the DJ played an eclectic mix of pop and house designed not to alienate anyone who is not au fait with the current chart=toppers.

Pangaea is a fun place to take a party of friends for a special celebration, order a bottle (vodka, gin, Scotch, wine), be looked after by immaculate hostesses and stay out very, very late.

Pangaea and Avalon are at Marina Bay Sands, 2 Bayfront Avenue

Open Thursday to Saturday, 10pm until late
