Bar review: KPO in Somerset, Singapore

Another story goes that it’s called KPO because it’s on the corner of Killiney, Penang and Orchard Roads

I’d driven past this bar countless times. It looked like a nice drinking hole, but its odd location – sandwiched between Orchard and Penang Road – stopped me from going in. Being invited there for a drink by a friend who lives nearby was a good opportunity to see what, if anything, I’d been missing.

KPO stands for Killiney Post Office, which is exactly what this place used to be; the new post office is right next door. (Another story goes that it’s called KPO because it’s on the corner of Killiney, Penang and Orchard Roads.)  Few stamps of its former postal glory remain: now, the two-storey café bar is awash with steel, glass and raw cement, but rather than exuding an industrial chill it actually feels quite homey.

Friendly staff greeted us and showed us to non-smoking alfresco seats with a partial view of Orchard Road – nicely obscured by trees and pretty green stuff. (A separate balcony for smokers overlooks Killiney Road.) Our novel, glass-topped table gave us a view directly into the bar below, proving excellent for covert people-watching.

From 8pm onwards, many of the drinks are alarmingly pricey ($18 for a Kronenberg beer), but during happy hour (from opening to 8pm) they are far more reasonable. Plenty of bar snacks and meals are available;  we only tried the French fries, but they were everything you would expect from a decent chip.
