We scour the bar scene to bring you the new and noteworthy. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it! This month Susan Pickles checks out Harry’s Bar at Dempsey Hill.
This recently renovated and reopened Harry’s branch features a stylish, monochrome décor and rattan furniture that’s perfect for the black-and-white Dempsey surrounds. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and welcoming, giving it a trendy neighbourhood bar feel. There was a lovely live band playing classic songs on the Thursday night my friend and I visited, and we could even have a conversation with the music! The band plays Thursdays and Fridays from 7.30 to 10.45pm, and Saturdays from 8.30 to 11.45pm.
The Chosen One:
Harry’s “Guest Beer” on the night of our visit was Cascade IPA ($14), a well-balanced India Pale Ale full of spicy aromas and juicy citrus flavours; it’s even better when paired with chicken wings. Look out for other craft beers on rotation, too; this month, the Guest Beer is Cereusly +50dB IPA by Heroes Beer Co ($14), described as a “crisp and dry American IPA with strong grapefruit, mango and tropical fruit notes, and floral and grassy aromas”. Harry’s also has a selection of beer cocktails, wines and spirits.
Harry’s has some pretty good happy hour offers, including a two-for-$20 deal (select draught beers by the pint, house wines and spirits by the glass) from 12 to 8pm Monday to Friday, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 8pm. Also, ask for the Bucket of the Month if you and your friends want to try something different for $49 (five bottles); this month, it’s Pilsner Urquell.
Bite on this:
The menu is very well thought out with a good balance of bar food and substantial dishes that will satisfy everyone’s taste buds. We loved the Harry’s Signature Wings Platter ($26), which includes three types of chicken wings (12 in total) – masala, sriracha and Harry’s signature wings; the sriracha ones were particularly finger-licking! But the highlight bite of the night was the sweet and spicy chicken tikka masala ($23).
Psst – the bar has recently introduced a weekend brunch from 11am to 4pm.
