Who Drinks There: People who have done their research – you won’t find any hint of what lies inside this hidden speakeasy from the street.

Best Thing About It: The cloak and dagger entrance. And the food – but more about that later. The warm welcome and prompt service goes down very well too.

Signature Drink: The Ensanglante Marie ($17) is a Bloody Mary, but not as you know it – instead of the meaty tomato man’s drink, this is a refined martini glassful of tomato extract, Russkiy Dozor vodka, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce. The wine list beckons for next time; it has 100 wines under $100.

Nibbles & Noshes: The quality of the food defines this place as a bistro bar. No salted nuts in sight. In their place, fish broth with seafood and garlic toast ($17) is a bowl of lip-smacking yet subtly piquant fish stock, topped with pan-seared prawns, a sweet scallop and a slice of fish. The green pea risotto with zucchini flower and parmesan ($24) was met with one word: wow! It was a lovely sight and came up trumps in the taste test too; a wonderful blend of colours, textures and flavours. The only quibble would be the rather small portions. Another winner is the perfectly al dente lobster linguine with ginger, chilli, coriander and olive oil ($28) – an Asian-style pasta dish with a bit of a spicy kick to it. Dessert-wise, try the rich and sinful French toast with dark rum sabayon ($15).

When to Go: Every night of the week from 6pm to 3am. Night owls, rejoice!
