Ever looked up at a missing section in the middle of a skyscraper and wondered, What is that? A private lap pool for a CEO? An orchid garden for a Fortune 100 company? In this case, it’s Fabrika.
In a time when any beer closet housed on top of a single-story warehouse is declaring itself a rooftop bar, Fabrika by Chivas 18 won’t call itself anything that it isn’t. Despite its open-air design and 17th-storey location, it describes itself as a “sky terrace”. What is the difference, you might ask? Just look up – it sits on the pinnacle of the old portion of Tower 15, with 12 new storeys above it.
The night I crossed the mosaic-tiled floor of this Moroccan-styled bar, it was drizzling outside. But did anyone else even notice? With a fresh breeze and long views of the port, the CBD and lower Chinatown, you got all the benefits of a rooftop bar without the risk of Mother Nature’s hassles.
With Chivas in the bar’s name, I picked my poison accordingly – a Golden Regal: an elixir of 12-year-old Chivas, melon syrup, lemon and club soda. Not surprisingly, many of the signature cocktails and food items contain whisky in some form.
Sizzling bar-side, the wafting aroma of beef bites marinated in, yes, Chivas was irresistible. Empty skewer sticks decorated almost every table.
As a part of a boutique hotel, it seems that Fabrika doesn’t expect or even want to pack the house. The vibe is chilled and laid back; the ambience upscale yet unassuming. Arrive between six and seven o’clock to secure one-for-one drinks and a seat for sunset. Rain or shine.
