Bar review: Breeze at the Scarlet hotel on Erskine Road, Singapore

By: Verne Maree

Breeze
33 Erskine Road (The Scarlet)
6511 3326

Breeze: Foam party

First Impressions:
Cool rooftop bar atop Chinatown’s heritage Scarlet boutique hotel, equally good for a girly get-together, business drinks or a hot date.

The Chosen One:
Probably any of the cocktails ($18 to $22); we tried the excellent Provocative (infused tequila, elderflower liqueur, yuzu plum wine, lime juice and roselle syrup) and the sweeter but zingily zesty Bold (Japanese whiskey, cloves, orange peel and ginger liqueur). And in addition to a comprehensive list of spirits and wines from all over the world, they offer a range of Japanese whiskeys and sakes, plus a selection of Archipelago draught beer at $19 a pint – Summer Ale, Belgian Wit and Irish Ale.

Breeze: Graciously Scarlet

The Cheapskate:
Err, you’re in the wrong place.

Bite on This:
Standouts from the interesting fusion of modern Japanese and traditional Southeast Asian bites include: grilled chicken Caesar salad ($12), served in a generous parmesan basket; mini wagyu beef burgers ($12); and avocado tempura ($14). All really good. For something sweet, order the dessert tasting platter ($18) of tiramisu, strawberry and cheese parfait, mango and coconut panna cotta and chocolate and hazelnut mousse cake.

Breeze: Dessert platter

Last but not least: Recently refurbished with comfy seating and atmospheric lighting, Breeze has a new and expanded tapas menu served from the cute rooftop gazebo.
