Bar review: 1-Altitude at One Raffles Place in Singapore

On a clear night the view is magical and stretches to Indonesia and Malaysia

Two elevator rides, one flight of stairs and a whole lot of equalising later, we emerge onto the deck of the much talked about 1-Altitude. Occupying the top three floors of One Raffles Place, 1-Altitude comprises three concepts bars and restaurants – 282 for sports fans and golfers, chic restaurant Stellar and, of course, 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar.

This sky-high gem is not only Singapore and Asia’s record-breaker, but in fact the highest alfresco bar in the world. Towering over the city at 282 metres, 1-Altitude is already popular for  corporate events and group celebrations. It has a sophisticated Manhattan vibe with Balinese-style day beds and a scattering of palms.

Our mid-week cocktails on the rooftop tasted even better in a refreshing breeze and with a view of the dazzling skyline. Prices are nearly as steep as the view to the ground below, but I can nevertheless recommend the monster mojitos ($18), the sake with raspberry ($16) and the marshmallow white chocolate martinis ($16).

If you’re peckish, try the tapas and finger foods from Stellar: an international array of bites, from Moroccan spiced kofta to Szechuan salt and pepper squid and Thai-style prawn, chicken and chilli dip.

The $15 cover charge, crowded bar and compound journey to the top is not a simple night out. But if you have visitors to impress, or are looking for Carrie Bradshaw-type night out on the town, the heights of 1-Altitude should rise to the occasion.
