In November 2023, Year 11 students Yujin, Beth and Kiana from the Australian International School (AIS) seamlessly organised the most recent annual instalment of the Model United Nations (Singapore) For Change (MUN 4C) charity conference. Here’s how they did it!
About Model United Nations
MUN 4C simulates an actual United Nations conference with students stepping into the shoes of diplomats as they represent individual countries. And, just like they would at the UN, participating students engage in debates during accurate and authentic simulations on current global affairs.
As a country delegate, each student is required to have an intimate comprehension of the stance taken by their assigned nation on the given topic or issue. Together with other participants, they will then determine collective actions for the betterment of nations.
This instalment of MUN4C, which was organised by AIS students, carried the theme of “Protect, Preserve and Produce Harmony”. By researching, debating and discussing future actions centred around the theme, the Model United Nations conference raises awareness of global issues. It also fosters passion among participating students and shapes them to become informed and responsible global citizens.
Nine other international schools in Singapore participated: the Anglo Chinese School (Independent), Canadian International School, Chatsworth International School, Dover Court International School, GESS International School, International French School, ISS International School, St. Joseph’s Institution International and UWCSEA Dover.
Lean but efficient!
With only three students, this year’s organising team was smaller than those of previous years. Despite this, all of them ensured that the conference ran without a hitch. This was thanks to effective communication, meticulous planning and drawing on the support of a team of volunteers.
Yujin says, “We believe that researching these global affairs, addressing them at the conference and discussing future actions that nations should take will help raise awareness of these issues. As students gain more passion and interest in these global affairs through the MUN conference, we hope that these small steps can create a significant impact in the future, positively influencing the world.”
Yujin served as the Secretary-General, with Beth and Kiana as Deputy Secretary-Generals. They were deliberate in assigning the countries in each community to ensure that there was diversity and inclusion. This allowed students to collaborate with peers holding contrasting viewpoints.
Beyond diplomatic debates
The Model United Nations event extended beyond diplomatic discussions. Besides fostering diplomatic skills, it contributes to charitable causes. In fact, the AIS team raised a significant sum of money and donated it to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Singapore Red Cross. The funds will contribute to the global crisis alleviation efforts carried out by Red Cross organisations.
Hear from…
AIS Principal Adam Patterson:
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the MUN4C organising committee for their outstanding efforts in making this conference possible. Your hard work and dedication have provided us with a remarkable platform for diplomacy and global learning. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to this event.
Kiana:
Throughout the whole planning process, I was able to better embrace uncomfortable ambition. It was such a large event to create with only three of us. This whole experience would have not been so rewarding, fulfilling and fun if it weren’t for Yujin and Beth.
The Australian International School is at 1 Lorong Chuan.
