Choosing a designer sofa is a bit like choosing a life partner. In an ideal world, you’ll fall in love at first sight and be totally comfortable together, whatever the occasion. Just like real life, it’s rarely that straightforward. Luckily, there are great Danish designers out there to help.

Much loved for its combination of both form and function, Scandinavian design brings elegance and practicality to any space. With its collection of authentic Danish designer sofas and other furniture, Danish Design Co is a hotbed of iconic living room looks, both past and present. Plus, virtually all of their sofas are modular, can be customised with leather or fabric upholstery (with removable covers) and made firmer or softer according to your personal preference. Here are ten of their stylish sofas for introducing some Scandinavian chic to your living room, whatever your needs may be.

1. Small living rooms

Perfect for smaller spaces, the Cloud Sofa by Bolia has clean lines that are lifted from the ground by a solid metal frame. If you’re after a minimalistic look that’s also comfortable try this one out! On the inside, Cloud is constructed in FSC-certified wood so that will make you feel good about buy it too!

If you have a large space to fill, the Dacapo is the way to do it. This highly modular super sofa comes in an enormous selection of corner, centre and chaise longue sections, plus there are a host of armrests, cushions and stools so you can get creative and comfortable.

3. Multi-purpose

Need flexibility? The Playground could be for you. Simply move the cushions around on this sofa-cum-daybed and you can get comfy to work, rest or play. The back blocks have a patented non-slip underside to hold them in place but are light enough for a child to lift. Clever, eh?

4. Starting a conversation

With its musical form and sculptural silhouette, the Grand Piano Sofa from 1984 takes both its name and inspiration from a grand piano. The designer Gubi Olsen’s love of classical music influences this design but it also his respect for soft, feminine forms. The result is a sofa aimed to enhance socialisation. The sofa has two armrests slightly set back, to encourage eye contact and private conversations.

The structural yet fluid design of the BM2213 sofa makes this a timeless classic that has found a home in embassies, executive offices, minister’s cabinets, upscale hotels and elite homes around the world.

9. A little luxury

The Delphi’s soft leather, clean lines and tufted design are the epitome of great Danish design and classic Erik Jørgensen style. Beautiful upholstery details and stitching, and a choice of leather, fabric or oak for the plinth are small touches that make a big difference.

10. Something different

A cosy two-seater, the iconic Poet sofa’s button detail and high curved back bring a touch of Victoriana to its distinctly Scandinavian style.
